For all of those out there who are about my age, today may hold special meaning. It is 9-02-10! I will always associate those numbers with the hit TV show Beverly Hills 90210. The show ran during the 1990s. It was a show about a group of rich teens who lived in that zip code. I watched it religiously as a teenager along with Melrose Place. I watched Brandon, Kelly, Brenda, Dylan and the other characters deal with issues like STDs, eating disorders, popularity, alcohol and drugs. It was a show about teenagers made for teenagers.
Nothing is that different today. Our teenagers are watching the same kind of shows. They tune in regularly for Glee, Gossip Girl and the new 90210. They follow characters like Rachel Berry on Glee, Blair Waldorf on Gossip Girl and Liam Court on the new 90210. They see these characters and others deal with teen issues like being accepted, self mutilation, alcohol, drugs and pregnancies. They see these dramas unfold on the TV. They live them in the halls of their own schools.
It is easy for us to watch these shows and think they are only made up and drama like that doesn’t happen here to our teenagers. The dramas on these shows are based on real issues our teenagers face. If you every get the chance to watch one of these shows with a teenager, do it. It may be the perfect time for you to start a conversation about what his or her life is really like. No matter how teenagers act they do still want and need caring adults to listen to them, love them and care about them.
