In college I worked on the residential staff. I was over a dorm for two years. Those were great times. My staff and I had some pretty crazy RA moments. A lot of those crazy moments happened before or after most of the students were on campus. I’d like to share one of those crazy moments with you now. Everyone had moved away except for five girls in my dorm and a handful of boys in another dorm. We were the only students on campus for the night.
Part of being on dorm staff requires you to pull a few all nighters dealing with different emergencies around the dorm. During some of our all nighters some girls from my staff and I had noticed a rather odd vehicle that seemed to make its rounds around the dorm. We had seen it around 4:oo am on several different nights. The golf cart like vehicle would drive though our dorm parking lot and stop every so often. After it left our parking lot it would go to another dorm parking lot. We had each seen this vehicle do this many times during the school year. None of us could figure out what the vehicle was doing.
The last night we decided we were going to get to the bottom of this mystery. It was time for a stake out. About 3:30 am, the five girls and I piled into my pink SUV and hide in the parking lot. We were all hunkered down waiting on this vehicle to appear. Around 4:00 am it did. We watched as a man on the vehicle drove through the parking lot picking up trash and placing it in the back of the cart. We followed him to each parking lot watching him carefully pick up all the trash. We had a lot of fun following the man around campus trying not to be noticed. Remember, we were in a pink SUV. I’m pretty sure he saw us. I have to say we were a little let down about our discovery.
College was a great time in my life. I had tons of crazy adventures. However, I am not the same person today I was then. I have grown up. As much as I enjoyed college I couldn’t and don’t want to go back to do it all again. Change is normal and to be expected.
It is strange that we expect change in every area of our lives except in church. The world is different now than it was when I was in college. The world is different now than it was last year. If the world is changing, why isn’t the church changing too?
Maybe it is because we are lazy or scared. Change can be scary but change is a must in life and in church. As we begin working on our Vision 2012, we must pray that God will give us the courage to change.

Re: The Mystery on Campus

I think one of the fears I have is of losing traditions. I love new contemporary Christian music, but it warms my heart to hear the old hymns we sang in church when I was growing up. I do think that it is time to look at things differently, and that many things will need to change in order to serve others as Jesus truly wants us to. I just hope that we don't 'throw the baby out with the bath water' in an effort to revitalize ourselves. I believe we need to open our hearts and our minds and reach beyond our comfort zone...I just pray that we can manage to keep a little comfort through some of the traditions we hold dear and still seek to do God's will for our church.

Re: The Mystery on Campus

Our change must be intentional. There is no use to reinvent the wheel if it is still working. However, if a wheel is broken it needs to be replaced. There is a place for new and tradition in the church. I just think sometimes we place more focus on tradition then on God.
