Yesterday I saw the coolest thing ever. To understand why my sighting was so cool I first need to set up the background. Yesterday was not the best day for me. All day I felt like I was putting out fires. I went home at the end of the day ready to chill and retreat from the world. After supper my mother informed me we had to make a run to the grocery store. That was the last thing I wanted to do. I was ready to zone out in front of the TV.
Reluctantly, I made my way to the grocery store. When I stepped out of the store I saw a very beautiful rainbow. In fact, it was a double rainbow. The adventurer in me took over. I had to find the end of the rainbow. I went driving out in the country looking for the end of the rainbow. I found it!
As I drove down a straight surrounded by sweet potato fields, I found both ends of the rainbow. I stopped my car and got out to see God’s handiwork. It was incredible. You could see the whole rainbow from start to finish. I stood there in the middle of the road surrounded by God’s beauty. It was breath taking. Lucky, I had my camera with me and was able to take a few pictures to remember the amazing rainbow.
It took a lot of work to find the end of the rainbow. I had to drive and navigate roads I had never been on before. I could have turned around and given up. I could have decided getting back to my comfortable sofa was more important and went home instead of following the rainbow. After I saw the end of the rainbow I knew the work had been worth it.
Following Jesus is a lot like following that rainbow. It takes work. It’s easy to give up and go back to the way things were. It’s easy to get scared and want to retreat back to the comfort of your old life. Following Jesus isn’t easy, but it’s well worth it. So often we don’t follow Jesus because it’s too much work. Anything worth having is worth working for. That includes Jesus!
