Monday night over 16 million people watched Jake propose to Vienna. Regardless of which camp you were in, Vienna’s or Tenley’s, you have to admit it made good television. I think I may have been one of the only people in America who did not watch The Bachelor this season. Monday night I was in my room watching the Big Bang Theory. My mother was in the living room watching The Bachelor. I did happen to walk by her TV as Jake popped the question. I stuck around long enough to see Vienna say yes, and then I retreated back to my nerds on the Big Bang Theory.

There are tons of dating shows on TV right now, all with the promise to help someone find the love of their life. Most of these shows end with a happily ever after couple that breaks up quickly after the cameras stop following their every move. Why are we so obsessed with love?

I started pondering this question last week after hearing my BFF Alex give a sermon on love. She pointed out that in America most of our songs are about love. In every other country in the world most of their songs are about the government. I had never really thought about the amount of time, energy, money, or media we devote to love in America. I think our obsession has caused our culture to lose the true meaning of love. When we think or talk about love in America we are almost always talking about romantic love and more times then we like to admit we are really just talking about lust.

It seems Americans have cheapened the meaning of love. The Greeks had the right idea. They had four different words for love. Eros was the romantic love. Storge was the word used to describe the love between family members. Philia was the friendship love. Agape was the highest form of love and meant unconditional love.

Maybe our cheapened meaning of love is the reason why we are so obsessed with love. Maybe we are so obsessed because we know there is something more out there then the lustful love we seem to be surrounded with. There is a greater love out there that we are all hardwired to long and search for. It is the love of God made real on the cross of Jesus Christ. During the season of Lent know that you are loved by God and it is not in the cheap American way, but it is with unconditional love known as agape.

Re: The Bachelor

Felica, this blog was amazing! First of all, I was voting for Tenley...along with just about the rest of America. I really did not keep up with the Bachelor until the last couple of weeks. I loved what you said about love and how you incorporated Alex's sermon in with it. Yall both made me look into what earthly things I put the most of my time into and what things I think I "love." It definitely made me ask myself why I tend to love these things more than I do other things. I definitely have realized that I need to put more time in to loving God and loving people. So thanks!!!
